How Grace and Craft Refresh the World

“It is the effort that human beings make to put the marks of skill and love on the artifacts they leave behind that ennobles us in the face of life’s tragic nature and lifts us close to the domain of angels.”

The most difficult message for anyone to hear or experience through words or actions is, ‘I don’t care about you.’ Yet, daily this message of indifference affronts us when we interact with our constructed world, from things that intoxicate and aggravate, to places that depress and alienate.

However, there are those artifacts, compositions, and places that are carefully and thoughtfully made with skill and grace that refresh our world, affect our well-being, communicate honor and respect for us, and say, “I care about you.” What can these valued things teach us about making?

The Care of Making explores the process of thinking and making, not only as a self-conscious creative activity, but also as an act of design benevolence, giving attention to how we shape our world, and make things and places that enrich the human spirit, making life worth living.

My hope is that this website will serve as a guide and inspiration for artisans by addressing the question,

“How do you make something worth caring about?”
